Heritage Trail extension to begin in the spring

MIDDLETOWN – Orange County and the City of Middletown have signed the final agreement necessary to extend the Heritage Trail through the city.

Mayor Joseph DeStefano said the work is expected to begin next spring with Middletown not laying out any of the additional cost for the main route.

“We are going to do some spurs off of the trail that the city will have to pay for on its own, like connecting the trail into the psychiatric center, through Oliver Avenue; we are going to be doing a traffic light, which will be funded under the DOT program, under that intersection because it has a high injury motorist ratio,” he said.

The additional work will be funded through other grants as well as city funds, said DeStefano.
