MONTICELLO – Two men were arrested late Wednesday afternoon after a Sullivan County Sheriff’s deputy pulled them over for a vehicle and traffic violation while driving on Route 17 in the Town of Thompson.

A computer check revealed the driver, Andrew Hollenbeck, 32, of Liberty, had a suspended license.  He was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle as well as misdemeanors of criminal possession of a controlled substance and possession of a hypodermic needle. He was issued an appearance ticket returnable to Thompson Town Court.

The passenger, Glynn Spencer, 60, of Kiamesha Lake, was charged with two counts of felony criminal possession of a controlled substance and a second count of drug possession with intent to sell.   He was allegedly in possession of some 239 bags of heroin weighing roughly 44.4 grams, and crack cocaine weighing about 8.8 grams.  He was sent to the Sullivan County Jail without bail.

Had the vehicle not been stopped, Sheriff Michael Schiff said that “within hours, this heroin would have been on the streets of Sullivan County.” He commended Deputy Kevin Lupardo for “looking beyond the traffic ticket.”
