Sullivan County fire damages home

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS –A mid-morning fire on Wednesday severely damaged a house at 793 Briscoe Road in White Sulphur Springs.

The blaze started as a chimney fire and extended into the house, according to initial fire radio calls, but Fire Chief Tim Fink said later the cause is unknown and under investigation by the Sullivan County Bureau of Fire.

Firefighters had difficulty extinguishing the blaze because of the extremely cold temperatures causing fire hoses to freeze and the need to truck in water by tankers.  Because of the lightweight construction of the house, the chief said there was a partial collapse.

No residents were injured. One firefighter was treated at the scene for a sore ankle.

The Red Cross assisted family members who are now homeless.

Several area fire departments were called in under mutual aid including Swan Lake, Kauneonga Lake, Jeffersonville and Liberty with other departments on standby.
