Sullivan County’s long time attorney, Sam Yasgur, dies

MONTICELLO – Sam Yasgur, until recently Sullivan County Government’s attorney, died Thursday night.

He died at age 74 following a long battle with cancer.

County Legislature Chairman Louis Alvarez called his friend “one of the best attorneys I have ever seen.” He said he was a whiz at federal litigation.

Yasgur retired recently and was replaced by assistant attorney Cheryl McCausland.

Yasgur was the son of Max Yasgur, who leased his 600-acre dairy farm in Bethel for the Woodstock Music and Art Festival in 1969.

He was a 27-year assistant district attorney in Manhattan. His career also extended to private practice and as Westchester County Attorney.

He wrote a book about his father, “”Max B. Yasgur: The Woodstock Festival’s Famous Farmer,” which was self-published in 2009.
