Skartados opposes Pilgrim Pipelines

ALBANY – State Assemblyman Frank Skartados (D, Milton) introduced legislation to prohibit development of the Pilgrim Pipelines, designed to carry crude oil and other potentially hazardous materials, along the New York State Thruway right-of-way.

The lawmaker said the pipeline, which would actually be two lines, would transport crude and refined petroleum products, north and south.  He said pipelines along the Thruway are just too dangerous.

“The Pilgrim Pipeline poses a serious threat to our community with a potential to affect our drinking water, our farmland and even the tourism industry that drives our economy,” Skartados said.  “This is why I have introduced legislation to ban oil pipelines along the Thruway. Protecting our families and our environment are top priorities for me.”

Skartados said pipeline leaks “too often” remain undetected until spills have caused major damage to surrounding communities and the environment.
