Newburgh officials briefed on proposed waterfront housing

NEWBURGH – Details of a proposed 108-unit, market rent apartment project on Newburgh’s waterfront were presented to the city council Thursday night.

Plans by FD Water Street Holdings LLC also call for commercial and retail space.

The project would be developed at the site of the Regal Bag building and two adjacent parcels on Water Street and Mayor Judy Kennedy was among those excited about it.

”This may, in fact, be the beginning of actually what I call putting the heart  back in Newburgh, because that whole Water Street once was commercial-mixed use,” Kennedy said.

Councilwoman Karen Mejia said the proposal has “the potential to be a great project.”

Representatives of the enterprise, Jonathan Gatsick and Joan Kaplan said before they would move forward, they need to explore a several issues, including any potential environmental ones on the property.
