KJ annexation measure passes in Assembly

ALBANY – Legislation that has the potential to stop Kiryas Joel’s annexation of 507 acres of land in the Town of Monroe has passed in the State Assembly.

The measure sponsored by Assemblyman James Skoufis (D, Woodbury) and cosponsored by Karl Brabenec (R, Deerpark), allows the Orange County Planning Board to evaluate this annexation and others and approve or disapprove it.

The State Senate version of the bill, sponsored by Senator William Larkin (R, Cornwall-on-Hudson) is in the Local Government Committee.

Brabenec said he is opposed to the annexation, which “demands very specific and decisive action.”
