Ball wants new TZ Bridge named ‘Purple Heart Memorial Bridge’

Proposed design of new TZB

BREWSTER – State Senator Gregory Ball (R, Patterson) is going to introduce legislation to rename the new Tappan Zee Bridge the “Purple Heart Memorial Bridge.”

Ball, who is chairman of the Senate Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs Committee, also wants to rename the bridge on the Taconic State Parkway at Bryant Pond Road in Putnam County the “Disabled American Veterans’ Bridge.”

Ball said on Tuesday that the men and women returning home from service with injuries incurred in the line of duty “are so worthy of this dedication."

Renaming the two bridges “will serve as a constant reminder that freedom is not free; it is paid for by the blood, sweat and tears of our service men and women,” Ball said.

The effort to rename the new TZ Bridge was initiated by Willy Nazario, commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Chapter 21.

Ball will introduce the name change legislation when the Senate returns in Albany next January.
