Police officer shoots and kills man in downtown Middletown

MIDDLETOWN – Police are investigating an officer involved shooting of a man at Sam’s Mart convenience store at Fulton and Academy streets in the City of Middletown.

Police Chief Ramon Bethencourt said officers were called to the scene around 3:30 p.m. for a violent dispute in which a man armed with a knife was chasing another.

While the case is under investigation, the chief would only say an officer fired at the suspect, shooting him. He died later at the hospital.

The suspect had no identification on him.

Bethencourt would not say if one or both officers – a male and female – fired on the man, but both have been placed on administrative leave until it is determined that they are fit to return to duty. Each officer has been on the force for over five years.

The State Police BCI, Middletown City police and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office are investigating.
