$5 million settlement of civil forfeiture claim announced against Dutchess medical practice

NEW YORK – The US Government has settled a civil forfeiture lawsuit against the assets of Mid Hudson Medical Group, P.C. after the government alleged the practice received millions of dollars in proceeds from two schemes to defraud Medicare, the State Insurance Fund, and private health insurance providers.

The stipulation and the order of settlement require that Mid Hudson Medical Group forfeit $5 million to the government.

On October 31, Dr. Spyros Panos, an orthopedic surgeon and practice shareholder, pled guilty to one count of engaging in a scheme to commit health care fraud, in a criminal case.

Under terms of the settlement, the practice is awarded credits for reimbursements it has already made and is required to pay $3.67 million to the federal government.
