Area distilleries to participate in Manhattan Cocktail Classic

NEW YORK – Eight distilleries in the Catskills and Hudson Valley will be participating in the state’s Manhattan Cocktail Classic opening night gala on Friday, May 17.

The black-tie event that will draw over 3,000 people, will see 24 spirits producers, including the local ones, showcasing their products and serving spirits prepared especially for the event, which will lead off a five-day, three-borough celebration with close to 100 events.

One of the local distillers, Monte Sachs of Catskill Distilling in Bethel, is planning on serving 500 of his own special cocktails.

“I make a buckwheat spirit, which is really buckwheat whiskey and we are making a cocktail with it,” Sachs said. “Though it is called The One and Only Buckwheat, it says ‘otay’ on the label.”

The local distilleries participating in the opening night event also include Coppersea in West Park, Harvest Spirits in Valatie, Hillrock Estate Distillery in Ancram, Prohibition Distillery in Roscoe, Still the One Distillery in Port Chester, Tuthilltown Spirits in Gardiner and Warwick Valley Winery and Distillery in Warwick.
