Gillibrand announces academy nominations

WASHINGTON – US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced her nominees to the nation’s service academies – The US Military Academy at West Point, the US Air Force Academy, US Naval Academy and Merchant Marine Academy. Four of her seven nominees from the Hudson Valley are women.

The senator has nominated Drew Thorpe of Cornwall to the US Merchant Marine Academy; Ashley Torres of Newburgh to the US Air Force Academy; Nahm Doug Kim of Putnam Valley to the US Military Academy; Jose Arroyo of Yonkers to the Naval Academy; Helen Robertson of Pelham to the Naval Academy; Mary Robertson of Rye to the Naval Academy; and Paige Rutkoske of Beacon to the US Military Academy.

A committee formed by Gillibrand chose the nominees from a large group of qualified applicants. Decisions were based on criteria including academic record, leadership potential, and overall achievement. Final acceptance is determined solely by the service academies.
