Troopers kill armed man in East Fishkill

EAST FISHKILL – A 40-year-old East Fishkill resident was shot and killed by a state trooper on the Taconic State Parkway early Tuesday morning. Police have now identified the man as John Terzani, who was involved in a domestic incident.

State Police said the incident began in the area of Carpenterl Road and the Taconic at around 6:20 p.m. It ended five hours later.

Dutchess County 911 received a report of an emotionally disturbed person who was armed with a handgun and when they arrived, he was fatally shot by a trooper.

Throughout the evening for five, crisis negotiators from three police agencies maintained contact with Terzani and tried to get him to surrender peacefully.

Attempts to subdue him with a Taser were ineffective and about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, Terzani pointed his gun at officers at which time a seven-year-veteran of the State Police, assigned to the Capital Regional Special Operations Response Team, fired several rounds striking Terzani.

He was rushed to Saint Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie where he died early Tuesday morning.

State Police are being assisted by the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office and East Fishkill Police.

Carpenter Road was closed Tuesday morning as the investigation continues.
