Over 200 properties up for sale in Ulster County tax auction

KINGSTON – When properties in Ulster County go up for auction on April 16 for failure to pay back taxes, there will be 211 on the block with close to $3.7 million in taxes owed.

Of those parcels, six have been deemed “hazardous” by the county, with just under $1.2 million owed. That is 32 percent of the total.

They include the HVES Inc. site in Plattekill, a former dump/toxic/clean up, with $140,024 owed; Syska Enterprises Inc., a tire dump in Saugerties, with $502,532 owed; Tire Recycling Inc. in Saugerties, a tire dump, with $29,958 owed; Brown, William R. Jr. and Lisa, a junkyard in Shawangunk, with $113,115 owed; Ellenville Scrap Iron & Metal Co. Inc. in Wawarsing (Ellenville), a junkyard in cleanup process, owing $359,872; and Smith, Robert D. & Willard E., in Wawarsing, a service center, owing $31,988.

Ulster County Comptroller Elliott Auerbach said the Town of Saugerties has the most parcels, 35, and the largest amount of outstanding taxes, at $966,516.

The Town of Ulster has 27 parcels and the Town of Wawarsing has 26 outstanding. The Village of Ellenville has $465,177 in back taxes owed.

The county’s property tax auction will be held on Tuesday, April 16 at Ulster County Community College Vanderlyn Hall.
