Community group wants to save over 200-year-old tree

FISHKILL – A 200-year-old sycamore tree next to the firehouse on Main Street in the Village of Fishkill needs some tender love and care and a save-the-tree ad hoc committee has been formed to urge village officials not to cut it down.

The tree, dubbed “George” in honor of former Mayor George Carter and President George Washington, lost some branches during the summer storms and freak October snow, but all in all, supporters of “George,” say it is a sound specimen. One arborist has already inspected the tree and group organizer Mara Farrell said she will ask the state Department of Environmental Conservation to take a look at it.

Farrell this isn’t the first historic tree in the Mid-Hudson Valley to gain notoriety.

“It’s reminiscent of the Balmville Tree and also the Forbes Butternut tree, so now, with the historic sycamore in Fishkill, we have three very famous trees,” Farrell said.

Mayor James Miccio did not return calls for comment about the fate of the tree.
