Monticello Village, police chief settle on buyout

MONTICELLO – With Police Chief Douglas Solomon leaving his long time position in Monticello at the end of the week, the village board Monday approved a $70,000 buyout.

Solomon begins his new job as chief of police in the City of Beacon next week.

He maintained he was owed for some 280 days for accrued and unused sick and vacation time. The village and he settled on 150 days, said Mayor Gordon Jenkins.

“He’s from the old tier and that’s what we’re changing now so people don’t literally bankrupt the village when they leave,” Jenkins said after a special session. “We just instituted a system where if you don’t use it, you lose it. That old tier system is tough. It’s a contract and you have to do it.”

Jenkins said the village will name an interim chief from among the ranks of the police force, but who will get the job has yet to be determined.
