Lloyd police buys water rescue devices

HIGHLAND – The Town of Lloyd has eight miles of Hudson Riverfront, several miles of streams, lakes, ponds and reservoirs and to prevent tragedies from occurring, the police department has purchased nine ResQ Save a Life Discs to rescue persons who become stranded in any of those waters.

Each disc is 12 inches in diameter and has 100 feet of 500 pound test line with five pound buoyancy. The devices look like Frisbees and are tossed into the water so that the person in trouble can grab onto them and be rescued.

Police Sgt. James Janso said the devices, which cost a total of about $400, will come in handy.

“We’ve had numerous boaters stranded, some swimmers in the water over the years and now we have the new Highland Landing Park that will open soon to the public, and it gives us more access to the river,” Janso said.

Each of the town’s seven police cars will be equipped with the devices and two will be given to the Highland Fire Department for their use.
