Whooping cough confirmed at Warwick school

WARWICK – The Warwick Valley School District has been informed that there is a confirmed case of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, in the high school. School officials said it is one of 30 cases diagnosed in Orange County this year.

Pertussis is a contagious respiratory tract infection that is treatable with antibiotics.  Signs and symptoms of the illness include runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing, red and watery eyes, a mild fever and dry cough.

School officials advise parents that if their child experiences any of those symptoms, they should call their pediatrician.

An informational letter to parents will be sent home with students on Monday.

“I urge all parents to read the FAQs and to call their physician if they have further questions,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Raymond Bryant.

School Health and Attendance Coordinator Maggie Adams and Bryant are in direct contact with the Orange County Health Department and will continue to follow their advice, the superintendant said.
