BOCES student rescued from partially ice covered pond

LIBERTY – Police rescued an 18-year-old BOCES student who left the campus in Liberty and ran off into a wooded area when he tried to swim across a partially frozen pond and became stuck in chest deep water halfway across.

The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office and Liberty State Police rescued the youth Tuesday.

Trooper Stephen Johnstone threw a rescue rope to the student, who refused to grab on. When the student became lethargic, the trooper and a volunteer fireman entered the water and retrieved him before he became submerged in the pond.

He was transported to Catskill Regional Medical Center for hypothermia and a mental health evaluation.
