Grand jury indicts man in murder of elderly Columbia County woman

HUDSON – A Columbia County grand jury has indicted a Hillsdale man on a second-degree murder charge in connection with the November 20, 2011 death of Lois Decker, 73, of Hillsdale.

Shafiqul Islam, 21, was also indicted on charges of criminal possession of stolen property.

Decker was found strangled in her home after Columbia County Sheriff’s deputies went there after her car was involved in an auto accident.

Islam allegedly stolen her car after killing her and rolled the vehicle on Route 23 in Martindale. When two would be good Samaritans stopped to offer assistance, Islam tried to steal one of their cars, but fled on foot to a nearby house where he allegedly stole a pickup truck from an attached garage.

A state trooper spotted the truck in Hudson later in the evening and placed Islam under arrest.
