Crash closes Route 9 in Putnam for hours

CARMEL – A Cold Spring man sustained a fractured pelvis and broken leg when the car he was driving reportedly crossed into the opposite lane of traffic on Route 9 in Philipstown on Thursday and slammed into a tractor-trailer truck.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office said Richard Turner, 48, has to be extricated by North Highlands Fire Department personnel. He was transported to Westchester medical Center for treatment of his injuries.

The driver of the truck, a Peekskill man, was not injured.

The collision ruptured the fuel tanks on the truck, causing over 100 gallons of diesel fuel to spill onto the road. Hazardous materials teams from the county and state responded to the scene for cleanup operations.

Route 9 was closed for some three hours.

Police did not say what caused the accident and there were no charged reported.
