Man charged with two New Windsor store burglaries

NEW WINDSOR – Police in New Windsor have one man in custody and are looking for a second in connection with two commercial break-ins early Friday morning.

At 2:10 a.m., suspects broke the front window of Smoke for Less store on Route 32 in New Windsor. A quantity of cigarettes was stolen, but the suspects were scared off by the audible alarm.

At 3:42 a.m., police responded to the Valley Farms Sunoco Station on Route 94 in New Windsor, for a burglar alarm sounding.  When officers arrived, they found the front glass door was smashed in and entry was gained.

Officers stopped a man walking in the area. He told them he was an eye witness to the incident.

It was later after the owner played back the security surveillance video that it was determined the man interviewed as a witness was one of the two suspects in the burglary. He had fled into a nearby apple orchard by the time police went looking for him.

With the assistance of the Newburgh K-9 unit, Torshiro Jenkins, 22, of Raleigh, North Carolina, was apprehended.

Police continue to look for the second suspect and ask anyone with information to call New Windsor Police Det. Christopher Sager at 845-565-7000.
