Kingston man indicted in attempted knifepoint rape of pregnant woman

KINGSTON – A Kingston man, who allegedly tried to rape a pregnant woman he abducted at knifepoint, was indicted Friday by an Ulster County grand jury on an eight count indictment.

Sampson Cox, 30, of 693 Broadway, was charged with attempted rape in the first degree, two counts of strangulation in the second degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, unlawful imprisonment in the first degree, menacing in the second degree, assault in the third degree and stalking in the fourth degree.

All of the offenses except the stalking are alleged to have occurred on December 15, 2011 at about 1:30 a.m. The victim was on Broadway in the City of Kingston when Cox, armed with a knife, allegedly accosted her and dragged her down a path that leads to Springbrook Village.

The woman and her unborn child were later treated at Kingston Hospital.

Kingston City Police arrested Cox later in the day while responding to a complaint by a separate victim.

He was charged in January 3, 2012 with criminal mischief in the fourth degree for destroying a mattress in his cell at the Ulster County Jail.
