One dead in Esopus crash

TOWN OF ESOPUS – A rollover accident on Route 9W at the intersection with Burroughs Road in the Town of Esopus resulted in the death of the driver and sole occupant in the car.  Daniel Hughes, 21, of Highland, was the son of an Ulster County deputy sheriff, Sheriff Paul Van Blarcum said.

State Police said Hughes was driving northbound on Route 9W at 9:15 a.m. and lost control while passing another vehicle. His car crossed the road and struck an earth embankment, coming to rest on its side.

Esopus Fire Chief Michael Cafaldo said it took firefighters 18 minutes to extricate the victim using the Jaws of Life. He was transported to St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie where he later died.

Troopers said Hughes was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

Police shut down traffic on the road for hours as a Reconstruction Team investigated.
