Beacon City Council to lift residency requirement for police chief

BEACON – As Beacon prepares to welcome its new police chief on March 5, city council members will hold a public hearing and vote to lift the residency requirement for that position.

Monticello Village Police Chief Douglas Solomon will become Beacon’s new top cop, but the council will vote to allow him to commute from Sullivan County to his new Dutchess job.

Beacon Mayor Randy Casale said there will be no commuting distance in the changed local law.

“We didn’t put any mileage; the policy will still be 30 miles, but the chief would be at the recommendation of the mayor and approved by the council,” he said.

Prior to a city council vote on February 21, lawmakers will hold a public hearing on the proposal.
