| Expanded Stewart terminal to be completed by the end of 2014 |
|
NEW WINDSOR – The planned expansion of the Stewart Airport terminal, which will allow for domestic and international passenger arrivals simultaneously, should begin construction this time next year with completion by the fourth quarter of 2014. At present, the federal government is allowing a two-year program of a movable partition to provide for inbound international flights, but only at times when there are no domestic flights arriving. Airport Manager Richard Heslin told the Stewart Airport Commission Tuesday that the $20 million project will conform to the current building layout. “It will be two stories, but the second story will be basically unoccupied,” Heslin said. “It’s a two-story high structure with what you see as the terminal. There will be a balcony in it for offices, future customs space, maybe future operations space; however, the area above the baggage carousels will be a two-story space.” The Port Authority is also working on major rehabilitation to Stewart’s two runways – 9/27 at 12,000 feet long, and 16/34 at 6,000 feet long. That work will include new pavement and upgraded electrical systems.
