Vietnam War vet gets long-overdue Purple Heart

Lang, with his Purple Heart

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS – Eugene Lang of Yorktown Heights was injured over 40 years ago during the Vietnam War and on Wednesday, at his home, he was presented with a Purple Heart medal.

In May 1968, Lang was hit by enemy fire and suffered a shrapnel wound to his right knee while serving with the 1st Air Cavalry in Nam. After being bandaged up, he returned to his unit, using his gun as a crutch. He was promised a Purple Heart, but never received one. He has been seeking one ever since, but the military had not officially recognized his injury and entitlement to the medal.

The issue was brought to the attention of Senator Charles Schumer, who took the case to the Army Board for Correction of Military Records.

The senator presented the medal to Lang at his home on Wednesday.
