Former Liberty mayor arrested for burglary

LIBERTY – A former Liberty village mayor and his brother have been arrested by State Police and charged with burglary after they were spotted at an unoccupied house on Upper Ferndale Road in the Town of Liberty.

William “Rube” Smith, 49, of Liberty, and his brother, Robert Smith, 53, of Parksville, were charged last Friday with felony third-degree burglary after an off-duty Sullivan County Sheriff’s deputy who lives next door, spotted suspicious activity and went over to investigate.

Both men were arraigned and released on bail.

William Smith was mayor of Liberty for six years before losing a reelection bid in 2009 to current Mayor Richard Winters.
