Beacon council approves slow going on hydrofracking

BEACON – The City of Beacon is joining other municipalities in signing onto a letter urging the governor to review all potential environmental risks of hydrofracking before the state makes a final decision on if it will allow it in New York.

Mayor Steven Gold said city council members and he have concerns about the impacts of the process.

“Many of the claims made about the advantages of getting gas and claims made about the impact on the environment may not be as valid as evidence seems to be coming out from places where hydrofracking is taking place,” he said.

Supporters of the process say there are no adverse effects to underground water supplies or the environment. Opponents differ, saying they will severely impact the water, soil and air.
