First affordable housing ready in North Rockland village

HAVERSTRAW – A new 26 apartment affordable housing project is ready for occupancy as state, Rockland County and local officials cut the ribbon Thursday.

Mayor Michael Kohut said the Village of Haverstraw is a blue collar community and the need for affordable housing is “very great.”

There are 25 two-bedroom units and one studio apartment in the complex that was developed by the Rockland Housing Action Coalition.

Kohut said while there are no other such projects on the drawing board at this time, the village would welcome them in the future.

“The board would entertain other projects if they came forward, particularly if it were coupled with removal of sub-standard housing,” he said. “Rather than increasing the numbers of units, we would like to improve the existing units, so if we could remove substandard housing and replace it with new good quality housing, we would love to do that.”

Murphy Manor Apartments are available to all income eligible persons who meet all program requirements. Monthly rents range from $500 to $875.
