Denning’s Point Bridge reopened after studies say it is safe

BEACON – The Denning’s Point Bridge that crosses Metro-North railroad tracks and links Beacon with the Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries on the Denning’s Point Peninsula, is going to be reopened on April 1.

The state Department of Transportation months ago had inspected the structure and “red flagged” it as potentially unsafe for heavy vehicles like fire trucks and buses.

The Institute hired consultants to inspect the structure with a fine tooth comb, and found it to be sound, said Institute Executive Director John Cronin.

“It’s not DOT’s responsibility to conduct complete and thorough inspections of bridges; it’s their responsibility to do their visual inspections and call into question bridges they think need further investigation, and that’s what we did,” Cronin said. “Fortunately, the bridge is structurally sound, but we do face, in the future, upgrading the bridge to accommodate our further development on Denning’s Point.”

The peninsula is currently home to the Institute’s Center for Environmental Innovation and Education.
