Nine Curves health clubs in region to reimburse prepaid memberships

ALBANY – Hudson Valley residents with prepaid memberships for Curves fitness clubs, and there are nine clubs that closed down in the region, will be reimbursed under an agreement announced Tuesday by State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.

The agreement was reached with Curves International, the franchisor of the local clubs.

Four clubs closed in Westchester County, three closed in Dutchess, and one each closed in Rockland and Putnam counties.

“If you do business in New York, then you have to play by the rules,” said Schneiderman. “Curves International – link any franchisor operating in the state – must refund the customers who prepaid for memberships they ultimately could not use.”

The parent company will establish a restitution fund for the consumers who requested a membership refund from any Curves club that closed in 2009.

Statewide, 60 closed their doors that year, according to the attorney general’s office.
