Teen fakes drowning, charged with falsely reporting incident

WAWARSING – A 13-year-old boy is in trouble with the law after he falsely reported a drowning.

The incident Sunday brought out several emergency response units, the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office and Atlantic Care Medivac from New Jersey.

The youth was transported to Ellenville Regional Hospital where he was to be transferred to an awaiting helicopter. When he arrived at the hospital, he advised paramedics he did not need medical assistance and had fabricated the story after being encouraged by friends to stage the drowning.

He was charged with falsely reporting an incident in the third degree, a misdemeanor, and issued an appearance ticket to appear in Ulster County Family Court. The teen was released to the custody of his parents.
