Light duty DoE trucks to use alternative fuel, according to Engel amendment

WASHINGTON – House Energy and Commerce Committee member Eliot Engel (D-Rockland-Westchester) has secured his amendment in the FY2012 Energy and Water Appropriations bill requiring mandatory use of alternative fuel vehicles by the Department of Energy and related agencies.

That would require all new light duty vehicles in the federal fleet to be alternative fuel vehicles such as hybrid, electric, natural gas, or biofuel, by December 31, 2015.

Engel’s amendment has also been included in the Agriculture, Department of Defense and Homeland Security bills and he intends to introduce it into all of the remaining spending bills this year.

According to the General Services Administration, the federal government operates the largest fleet of light duty vehicles in America with over 660,000 vehicles in the entire fleet.
