White Plains man charged with trying to rape college student

WHITE PLAINS – A White Plains man has been arraigned on a seven count indictment in connection with alleged attempt to rape a female student in her dormitory room at Purchase College in Harrison.

Dante Beamon, 26, of White Plains, who is not a student at the college and did not know his victim, walked into her dorm room at 1:30 in the morning on November 13, 2010. He demanded that she remove her clothing so that he could have sex with her. The woman repeatedly told the man to leave, but he refused.

In an effort to sexually assault her, he choked the woman with a piece of clothing, but she struggled and was able to escape and seek help.

Beamon fled the building and a police manhunt was able to track him down and arrest him on the campus.

He remains in the Westchester County Jail without bail and faces up to 15 years in state prison if convicted.

He was formally charged with attempted rape, burglary, sexual abuse, attempted assault and unlawful imprisonment.
