Food costs continue to inch upward

KINGSTON – The weekly cost of feeding an Ulster County family of four during the week ending February 11 rose by one percent. The cost of food was $217.17, up $1.41 since the previous survey conducted by the Ulster County Consumer Fraud Bureau during the week ending January 28.

Modest decreases in four categories were offset by increases in Dairy and Beverages.

The marketplace survey is intended to provide Ulster County consumers with information regarding fluctuations in the local cost of retail foods. They survey is conducted twice each month in three local chain supermarkets. An average is taken and comparisons made with the previous survey.

The items in the survey are based on the USDA’s Moderate Cost Family Food Plan, which projects the cost of feeding a family of four.

Categories include Grain Products; Meat and Fish; Dairy; Fresh Fruits and Vegetables; Processed Fruits and Vegetables: and Beverages.
