| NYC report says electricity costs, pollution would rise if Indian Point is closed |
|
NEW YORK – A study commissioned by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection by Charles River Associates found if the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant were to close, electricity costs would increase; there would be a loss of some 1,100 employee jobs; and the impact on grid reliability would be compromised. The study said there would be more pollution emitted into the air. Indian Point support group New York AREA (Affordable Reliable Electricity Alliance) Chairman Arthur “Jerry” Kremer said this study, on the heels of others, yields the same result – “There are major consequences” to closing Indian Point for New York City and the state. “The unmistakable fact remains that eliminating the current safe, clean, non-toxic emitting source of 25 percent of the city’s power will only impugn the quality of life enjoyed by millions of New Yorkers while doing nothing to expedite New York’s progress from recession to recovery,” Kremer said. |
