Construction trades continue to suffer in weak economy

Diorio sees the proposed $114 million new Orange County
Government Center as a potential major boost to the
construction industry

MID-HUDSON – Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer, one last time to enjoy the weather, the lake, the pool or river, and barbeques.  The holiday was created to salute America’s workforce, and for the construction industry it continues to be tough times for labor.

Hudson Valley Building Trades Council President Todd Diorio, who is business manager of Laborers Local 17, said its still rough going for area construction workers.

“We’re fighting every day with job cuts in Sullivan County – I represent the DPW up there; there’s no private money really being spent so it’s been a struggle and negotiations have been tough recently in the public sector,” he said.

But, Diorio is optimistic about next year with continued construction at the Orange County Community College Newburgh campus, new construction at the Middletown OCCC campus, the Marketplace shopping center in the Town of Newburgh, the Taylor Biomass facility in Montgomery, and the possible construction of a new Orange County Government Center in Goshen.
