16-year-old, 26-year-old boyfriend killed in Florida crash

Fireman looks over wreckage Sunday evening

VILLAGE OF FLORIDA – Police believe it was excessive speed that caused a one-car crash that claimed the lives of a 26-year-old man and his 16-year-old girlfriend Sunday evening.

Village of Florida Police said a car driven by Joseph Roman, 26, struck a pole and several trees on Highland Avenue at 6:45 p.m. Sunday, demolishing his car and killing himself and his girlfriend, Brittany Smith, 16. They were both from Florida.

She was a sophomore at SS Seward Institute in Florida.

Police said the couple may have been going from one family’s home to the other to wish their mothers a happy Mother’s Day.

The school was closed today for a teachers’ conference, but brief counseling will be established Tuesday for students, parents and staff.
