West Hurley man convicted of selling morphine stolen from pharmacy

KINGSTON – It took an Ulster County Court jury just one hour to find a West Hurley man guilty of two counts of criminal sale of a controlled substance in the third degree.

Matthew Galunas, 42, of 24 Park Drive in West Hurley sold pharmaceutical grade morphine pills tin the presence of members of the Ulster County URGENT task force on two occasions in February 2008.

In the first case, 200 pills were sold and in the second, 300 pills were sold. Once police had them in their possession, they traced them to a burglary at a CVS Pharmacy in Margaretville.

It was learned that five weeks before the sale, the Delaware County drug store had been broken into with the security system being disabled and Galunas going in through the ceiling.

Over $27,000 work of narcotic drugs, including Hydrocodone, oxycontin and morphine, were taken.

Galunas already pled guilty to burglary and possession of controlled substance charges in Delaware County and is currently serving a state prison sentence for those convictions.
