Kaplowitz proposes public employee pension reforms

ALBANY – Democratic State Senate candidate Michael Kaplowitz proposed revamping the state pension system for public employees to eliminate abuse and save taxpayers millions.

Kaplowitz, who is seeking the 40th District seat, proposed removing overtime from calculating pensions for public employees.

“There has been tremendous abuse and tremendous taxpayer expense where people pervert their pension benefit in the last three years of their working years in actuarially we pay for that for pensions for the next 30, 40 years going forward,” he said, Monday. His second proposal would institute a 401K type pension plan for new employees.

That, said Kaplowitz, would save $2.2 billion over a three year period.

Kaplowitz will face the winner of a Republican primary in September between Assemblyman Gregory Ball and Mary Beth Murphy.
