Car skids on icy roads, crashes into propane truck

SAUGERTIES – A sudden afternoon snow squall that covered the road surface coupled with suddenly dropping temperatures causing slipper road conditions is being blamed for a crash between a car and a propane truck carrying 300 gallons of the fuel Thursday. There was no leakage.

The crash, on Route 212 in the Town of Saugerties, resulted in injuries to both drivers, town police said.

The propane truck, owned by Kingston Oil Supply, was easterly on Route 212, being operated by Kenneth Scofield, 50, of Ghent. A passenger car operated by Rosalyn Murphy, 45, of Philmont, was traveling westerly when she started to round a curve and lost control on the slippery pavement, crossed into the opposite lane of traffic and struck the truck on the running board and then proceeded to strike the driver’s side rear tire causing the two rear axles to break and the drive shaft to become dislodged.

The driver tried to avoid the collision and drove to the far right, striking and breaking a utility pole.

Murphy was taken to Albany Medical Center with a head injury. Scofield was transported to Kingston Hospital with an injury to his left knee.

No tickets were issued.
