Sun glare blamed for car-school bus accident

GERMANTOWN – Columbia County Sheriff’s officials are saying an accident involving a school bus and a private car on Main Street in Germantown Monday morning was caused by sun glare.

The 17-year-old female driver of the car, identified by police as Michaela Lawson of Germantown, told police she was blinded by the sun as she turned onto Main Street and drove into the rear of the school bus, which was stopped with red warning lights on.

The bus driver, Thomas Knapp, 61, complained of back pain and said he would seek his own medical treatment.

One of two passengers on the bus, an 18-year-old female, complained of back pain and was taken to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson by her mother.

Another student, a 12-year-old male, was evaluated by the school nurse and returned to school.

No tickets were issued.
