Hudson Valley sites are “inappropriate” for terror trials, says Schumer

WASHINGTON – None of the sites discussed as possible locations for trials of 9/11 terrorists would work, US Senator Charles Schumer told US Attorney General Eric Holder.

In a telephone conversation, the senator told Holder the sites were “inappropriate.”

Four Hudson Valley locations were suggested including the federal courthouse in White Plains, West Point, the Air National Guard Base at Stewart Airport and the Otisville federal prison. Newburgh Mayor Nicholas Valentine also invited the feds to move the trials to his city; not at Stewart, but at the courthouse in downtown Newburgh.

That prompted Orange County Executive Edward Diana to say he would fight any trial location in his county.

Schumer, meanwhile, told Holder that Westchester and Orange County are too densely populated for the trials and Orange does not have the infrastructure to hold them.

The trials were slated to be held in New York City, but because of a backlash from people saying they should be held in the city where the World Trade Center was attacked and the Twin Towers fell, President Obama has asked that other locations be considered.
