Integrity officer veto not unexpected

GOSHEN – A veto of a local law that would have established a public integrity officer in Orange County government was not unexpected, County Legislature Minority Leader Jeffrey Berkman said Monday.

Last Friday, Republican County Executive Edward Diana vetoed the measure which was approved in the final days of the 2009 legislative session, saying it was flawed.

Berkman, leader of the minority Democrats on the county legislature, said they still believe the position is needed.

“People should know that we are proud of the fact that we think that the county government should have oversight, just like all government and that it will be helpful to saving money and efficient running of government,” he said, noting it would also be for whistleblower protections.

Berkman said his caucus will discuss an override attempt, even though he realizes they do not have votes to pull that off.
