All Indian Point sirens sound during test

BUCHANAN – All 172 sirens in the Indian Point nuclear power plant emergency planning zone sounded during the quarterly full volume test Wednesday morning and has triggered federal approval to take apart the old siren system.

The sirens are within a 10 mile radius of the plant in the counties of Westchester, Rockland, Orange and Putnam. They were sounded for four minutes and all worked properly, said spokesman Jerry Nappi.

“Recently the federal government gave us permission to dismantle the old system as it’s not in use anymore and the new system has demonstrated its reliability,” he said.

The tests are conducted quarterly as per instruction of the Nuclear Energy Commission.
