Teen with learner’s permit killed in car crash

STOCKPORT – A Columbia County boy, who obtained his learner’s permit just 10 days ago, was killed in a late night crash in the Town of Stockport Monday, Columbia County Sheriff David Harrison, Jr. said Tuesday.

Pronounced dead at the scene was Nicholas VanBenschoten, 16, of Columbiaville.

Harrison said the youth was driving at an excessive speed on Southers Road at about 11:10 p.m. when he ran off the road, struck a culvert, became airborne crashing into a large stone pillar.

Two rear seat passengers survived the accident. Allison Shaw, 17, of Valatie and Jeff Beaulieu, 17, of Stuyvesant Falls, were injured. Shaw was transported to Albany Medical Center in stable condition while Beaulieu was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition.
