Woman arrested for $700,000 embezzlement scheme

NEW PALTZ - State Police arrested Mary Merten, 43 of 285 Springtown Road, New Paltz, for grand larceny 2nd degree, forgery 1st degree, falsifying business records 1st degree and possession of a forged instrument 1st degree, all felonies.             

Merten’s arrest stems from a five month long investigation by the New York State Police into the theft of money from a local attorney’s office where Merten was employed as a Legal Secretary and bookkeeper. 

Over the past five months, the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations along with the assistance of the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office and the New York State Police Financial Crimes Unit investigated the theft of over $700,000 from both corporate and personal accounts associated with her employer.

Merten was arraigned in the City of Kingston Court and was remanded to the Ulster County Jail in Lieu of $500,000 cash bail.
