NEWBURGH – A 15-year-old Newburgh youth was arrested following a report of a man with a gun in the area of South Lander Street and Benkard Avenue late Tuesday night. Police spotted the suspect walking in the neighborhood and as officers got out of their patrol car, the youth grabbed his waistband and started to run down the street and then turned into 41 Benkard Avenue where he ran into a first floor apartment. Officers were in pursuit and saw him throw a semi-automatic .380 caliber handgun on the floor. Officers tackled the youth in the hallway and after a fight, he was taken into custody. A search of the youth revealed he was in possession of 1.7 grams of crack cocaine and 2.9 grams of marijuana. On the way to the police station, he kicked up the window of the police car. An inspection of the gun revealed it was non-functioning. The boy was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fifth degree, obstructing governmental administration in the second degree, resisting arrest, criminal mischief and unlawful possession of marijuana. He was turned over to his father pending a court appearance. During the struggle, an alleged relative, Daejon McDonald, 19, of 2 Lake Drive in Newburgh, got involved by obstructing officers from arresting the youth. He was also arrested and charged with obstructing governmental administration in the second degree.
