| WASHINGTON – A Westchester County
Marine was one of four killed in Afghanistan on October 26, the Defense
Department announced Tuesday.
Capt. Eric Jones, 29, of Westchester died along with three other Marines
while supporting combat operations in Helmand province.
“My condolences go out to the family and friends of Capt. Eric Jones
who was one of four Marines killed (Monday) in Afghanistan,’’
said Westchester County Executive Andrew Spano. “Capt. Jones grew
up in Pound Ridge and was a 1999 graduate of Fox Lane High School. We
salute his bravery and honor the sacrifice he made on behalf of his country.’’
Jones was assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 169, Marine
Aircraft Group 39, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, I Marine Expeditionary force,
based out of Camp Pendleton, California.
Jones was commissioned in the Marines in August 2004. He was a Huey helicopter
pilot.
During his tenure with the Marines, Jones had been awarded air medals,
Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism
Service medal and National Defense Service Medal.
The other Marines killed were identified as Cpl. Gregory Fleury, 23, of
Anchorage, Alaska; Capt. David Mitchell, 30, of Loveland, Ohio; and Capt.
Kyle Van De Giesen, 29, of North Attleboro, Mass.
